Exorda

Budgeting

Can you manage your finances without a budget?

A budget begins with a plan: this much for food, this much for transport, this much for everything else.

That works for many people. It is not the only way to understand personal finances.

For some, setting category limits creates another system that needs maintaining before the actual tracking has even begun. When the plan and real life part company, the budget can start to feel like a list of broken promises.

Recorded numbers first

Exorda starts from actual income, expenses, assets and debts. It does not currently have category budgets or a budget-versus-actual report.

This is a real limitation if category limits are the main thing you need. Exorda’s starting point is the recorded situation and what it means to the user.

A month can show that income exceeded expenses, or that it did not. Neither result needs a green tick, a red lecture or an invented score.

The month as it happened

Looking at actuals changes the first question. The useful questions are what happened and whether it keeps happening.

One expensive month may contain an annual insurance bill. Food spending may also have been rising for six months. Those are different situations even if the number at the bottom happens to be the same.

Exorda can estimate the current month from recent history, recurring entries and the pace of the month when there is enough data. The result remains a forecast.

A finished month has a clear result

Completing a month gives you a known point in time. It can be positive or negative. The useful part is that the month is no longer a loose collection of half-remembered payments.

Once several months are clear, patterns become easier to see. A change may call for a limit elsewhere, a different habit or no response at all when the variation has an ordinary explanation.

The work behind the tracking

Without a formal budget, the work is in recording the month and comparing it with the months around it.

If expenses keep exceeding income, Exorda will not repair that. It keeps the direction visible while the user decides what, if anything, needs to change.

For some people that is enough structure. For others it becomes the groundwork for a budget later.
